Teacher Skills Forum 2020

The aim of this session is to share experiences and insights gained through teaching science through project-based learning at King’s Academy. One of the most valuable tools we have been working with in project-based learning is the individualized checklist. Students are often more motivated when they are given the chance to create their own checklists in collaboration with their teachers for their projects, especially students with mild learning disabilities, as they are able to plan their time according to their skills and are not overwhelmed by time constraints towards the end of projects. Individualized checklists can be utilized by all students. It gives structure to those who desire it and allows flexibility to those who crave it. It also allows students to build and practice skills with the appropriate level of challenge. There are obvious applications for students with special needs, but individualizing checklists in this manner benefits all students (ALTEC at the University of Kansas, 2004). In this session participants will receive handouts showing sample checklists and worksheets for creating them.

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Understand the importance of checklists for individualized learning.
- Work with learners (especially students with special needs) to create individualized checklists.
- Assist students in defining their own goals and monitoring their own progress.
